Becky VanLoon, National RFL Lead

Last week I had the opportunity to speak with the Relay For Life staff during their Hype Week. Our Staff are AMAZING support systems, and I personally am so grateful for everything they do for and with us. I took two weeks off this holiday season from my paid job and from my volunteer work and it was good for me to reset. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the busyness of Relay and life in general that we bog down our brains and wear ourselves out. When we start focusing on the busyness, we tend to forget something vitally important – the mission. Every event’s focus should be on mission leading, rather than following.

During this Relay season, please remember that Relay is volunteer led, staff supported. So being very transparent with you…I empowered the staff, to empower you to go and do the amazing things that you do. You can do it! And there is a HUGE support system from your local level all the way up to help you. Never ever think that you are alone. All you have to do is ask.

This year, I would really like each Relay to look at your event and your community and discover what makes you unique? A famous philosopher (Piglet from the Winnie the Pooh stories) said, "The things that make me different are the things that make me." What makes Relay special, overall, is that each is a reflection of their community. Your community = your uniqueness = Relay success (with a mission focus). So, what makes you unique?

Happy New Year my friends!

ACS has published Cancer Facts & Figures annually since 1951. This annual report provides the most current information about cancer. A unique feature of these publications is their projections of the number of cancer cases and deaths expected in each state and in the nation in the current year.

The newest edition of 2026 Cancer Facts & Figures was published just two days ago!! Take time to look at this information and stay informed.

We are starting a series this year to explore 12 of our partner countries. The first in our series is Ireland. They began partnering with us in 2009.

Tell Us a little about Relay in Ireland:

Relay For Life in Ireland has been on an incredible journey. Over the last three years, our income has tripled—from €520,000 in 2022 to €1.6 million in 2025.

This growth reflects something deeper than numbers: it shows the power of leading with our mission. By sharing the real stories of the survivors, families, volunteers, and communities we serve, we’ve seen how people connect with purpose. When they understand why Relay matters, support and generosity naturally follows. It’s a reminder that hope, compassion, and community spirit remain at the heart of everything we do and that sense of purpose is what keeps our movement growing and brings people back year after year. Next year we’re adding two more events to the calendar, and our big dream—a Relay For Life in every county in Ireland—is getting closer and closer.

What makes Ireland Relay unique?

While every country brings its own wonderful flavour to Relay, Ireland’s events stand out in a special way. Each Relay For Life in Ireland is 100% volunteer‑led and proudly remains a full 24‑hour experience, honouring the round‑the‑clock journey faced by those affected by cancer. But what truly sets us apart is how deeply each event reflects its local community. From local dance troupes and community bands to local food producers and community traditions, every Relay becomes a living expression of the place it’s taking place in. No two events look the same—and that’s exactly what we love. Each one is a celebration of local pride, creativity, and the shared commitment to supporting people facing cancer across Ireland.

Does Your Event Have a Gold Together Team?

Funds raised by Gold Together teams are restricted to childhood cancer research, programs, and services—making a direct impact where it’s needed most.

In 2025, 167 Gold Together teams nationwide raised $850,000. Families facing childhood cancer in your community are counting on us.

The National Gold Together Team can help your Gold Together team by:

--Help you strategize for recruiting a Gold Together team

--Identify and engage new sponsors

--Recognize and support existing Gold Together captains

--Incorporate Gold Together into your event

--Partnering with local foundations and schools

--Supporting your ELT

Did you know—the average Gold Together team raises $5,000!

What event wouldn’t love an extra $5,000 (or more) in revenue?
