Becky VanLoon, National RFL Lead

As we gather around tables this Thanksgiving, I wanted to take a moment to share how thankful I am for each of you. Your dedication to Relay For Life isnโ€™t just about events, itโ€™s about hope, community, and making a real difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.

Because of your time, energy, and heart, research is being conducted, progress is being made, survivors feel celebrated, caregivers feel supported, and families feel less alone. Thatโ€™s something truly special.

So, from myself and the rest of the National Relay Leadership Teamโ€”thank you for being the reason Relay For Life continues to shine so brightly.

Wishing you a holiday filled with joy, laughter, and moments that matter most.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Chris Doe, National Relay LeadershipTeam Member

--Where do you live? DeKalb, IL

--Reason for Relay-ing: My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 and I got involved in 2001 (after trying to get involved since 1999 but no one would contact me back LOL - I showed them!). She lost her battle in 2002, and I vowed to never stop until I had to!

--If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? Teleporting - there are so many places I want to go or need to be sometimes that driving or flying just takes too darned long! Imagine the Relay's we could attend if we could teleport!!!!

--Favorite ice cream flavor: Baskin Robbins Pralines 'n Cream

--What is one thing you would like other volunteers to know: I'm passionate, sometimes a bit too passionate, about things that I believe in (and I'm involved in several different organizations that have affected me during my life). And I tend to be a compulsive volunteer. However, I find that I'm most happy, and believe it or not less stressed, the busier I am. So, I try to keep myself busy....it keeps my mind going as well.

During this time of giving thanks, the Gold Together Advisory Council and I want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every Gold Together Team Captain and Team. Thanks to your incredible generosity and unwavering support, we were able to raise over a million dollars this year! These funds will go a long way in advancing pediatric cancer research, providing essential programs, and delivering much-needed support services for our youngest cancer patients and their families.

We are truly inspired by the difference we have made together and would love to connect with you in 2026. Our aim is to provide ongoing support to you and your team, help you connect with other Gold Together teams, collectively work towards increasing awareness about pediatric cancer AND getting more Gold Together teams signed up. Your dedication and commitment have been instrumental in our success, and we look forward to collaborating even more closely in the future.

Thank you once again for your incredible support and for being part of the Gold Together community. We wish you all a joyous and meaningful Thanksgiving.

On Friday November 7th, 80 delegates from 30 of the 36 Relay For Life partner organizations came together in London to commence three days of meetings. This was our chance to share successes, best practices, and new ideas as well as to find inspiration in this amazing global network, which in 2024 engaged 15,000 volunteers in hosting over 1,700 Relay For Life events, celebrating over 50,000 cancer survivors.

The meeting started with a look back over the 40 years of Relay For Life and the impact it has had since its inception, as well as a look back at the parallel work of the ACS Cancer Action Network and Global Cancer Support programs. Over the following two days Global Relay For Life partners presented on successes that their programs have recorded, including significant growth, youth expansion, large city events, new strategic approaches, and more. We also heard external vendors from the charity sector who shared insights from their work and what they are seeing in the charity landscape.

On Sunday morning our Global volunteer team took things to the next level, sharing their own personal journeys with their cancer charities and explaining how they came to work at this level. These stories showed us what is important to volunteers and what we need to provide in order to inspire more people to contribute in this way.

We wrapped up the weekend with an inspiring story from of the Relay journey from a young man in Ireland who lost his mum to cancer, which lead him and his brothers to bring Relay to their community. He has since then become a Relay staff member at the Irish Cancer Society.

We left proud of the impact that we all have together through Relay, inspired to know that we are part of a global movement and better connected to continue developing together.

How Expanding Access to Genetic Testing Can Help Breast Cancer Survivors and Their Families

Research is essential to keep improving how cancer is prevented, detected, diagnosed, and treated. Because of clinical trials and other research studies, people with cancer are living longer with a better quality of life.โ€ฏThe American Cancer Society (ACS) is proud to be the largest non-government funder of cancer research in the United States. ACS currently supports more than $100 million in breast cancer research alone.

ACS highlights the groundbreaking work of Dr. Steven Katz, MD, MPH (pictured here), professor of health management and policy at the University of Michigan. Dr. Katz is an ACS grantee. His research has focused on expanding access to genetic counseling and testing for breast cancer patients and their families.

As a nationally recognized expert in cancer communication, decision-making, and survivorship care, Dr. Katz has dedicated his career to improving the quality of the patient experience.
